I took a long Sunday drive to visit a National Historic Landmark in Southwest Washington State, the Cedar Creek Grist Mill. I’ve been wanting to do this for quite some time and waited until the autumn months to visit. This piece of Americana is a history buff’s and photographer’s dream! This 1876 built grist mill is located along the Cedar Creek, in Woodland, WA. It’s not far from Portland, OR and a good 2 hours and more drive from the Puget Sound area in Washington. The grist mill is open only a few hours each weekend afternoon, so plan your trip accordingly. It is really worth the drive! And fall time is a great time to visit, since the mill is located in a lush forest setting with lots of Fir trees and Bigleaf maples. Visitors can watch how grains are ground the old-fashioned way. There is also a really cool covered bridge one drives through to get to the small parking area. As well, there is a short nature trail along the Cedar Creek and through the lush, green forested area. The grist mill is a living museum. There is no fee to visit, but there is a donation box.

I discovered the Cedar Creek Grist Mill a couple of years ago, in mid-summer. It’s a fascinating place. You did a good job getting all the angles and viewpoints. The photo you shot from the covered bridge is very close to what I have seen on some postcards and calendars and I love that peekaboo shot through the mossy branches.
Thank you! Yes, Cedar Creek Grist Mill really fascinated me. Although the lighting is rather poor inside the grist mill, I love the smell of these old wooden buildings. It brings up memories of long ago …LOL I think I would like to visit during the early spring, when the water levels are much higher in the creek. Should make for some nice images.
